"At this level, the feedback I have to give to the players is that it comes down to fine margins. I'm happy with the way we've played and we've done exceptionally well as quite an inexperienced team. We acquitted ourselves very well but probably the story of the tournament for us was that it wasn't quite enough. You can't say we didn't try though."

England team analysis

  • 1-4-3-3 with captain Jodie Brett operating in holding midfield.
  • Very well organised defensively, which was reflected in each unit on the pitch.
  • Looked to get forward quickly upon winning the ball.
  • Displayed physical strength and positive aggression.
  • Tactically adept and strong in midfield but sometimes reverted to long balls when denied time on the ball.
  • Midfielders able to switch between one holding player when defending and two holding midfielders when in possession of the ball.
  • One of the full-backs tended to push up into an attacking midfield berth, exploiting the space left when the attacking player ahead of her pushed in off the line.
