Two Lotta Schelin goals in a 2-1 victory against North Korea were not enough to take Sweden into the FIFA Women's World Cup quarter-finals, as the Asian nation progressed on goal difference from Group B along with the United States.
Early goal
Sweden needed to win by three goals to earn a last-eight meeting with the holders Germany, and they had the perfect start when Schelin headed in the opener on four minutes. The same player struck again in the 54th minute, by which time Ri Un-Suk's neat finish had drawn North Korea level. Both teams finished on four points in the section, although North Korea sealed the all-important runners-up spot on goal difference.
US face England
Meanwhile, Lori Chalupny's first-minute goal earned the United States a 1-0 success against Nigeria in Shanghai, top spot and a quarter-final against England on Saturday.
