What to watch for in Saturday's EURO qualifiers

Is Claudiu Keşerü's lucky number really lucky? Can Greece erase the memory of a home loss to the Faroe Islands? Can Poland keep Germany off the top of Group D? Find out tonight.

Group D
 Gibraltar game for Germany
That then-coach Allen Bula was bursting with pride after a 4-0 away defeat by the world champions in December says a lot about Gibraltar's realistic ambitions for this game. Lukas Podolski – on 48 international goals – might think this a good opportunity to reach 50 for Germany, but a 2-1 home friendly reverse to the United States (and perhaps a Liam Walker effort that almost caught Manuel Neuer out when the sides last met) may remind Joachim Löw's men that resting on laurels is never a wise option.

Poland's punishing pace
The 16-goal top scorers at the midway stage in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying, Poland have plenty of cause for optimism as they take on Georgia, having beaten their guests 4-0 in Tbilisi last time out. A place in Poland's footballing Hall of Fame awaits goalkeeper Artur Boruc if he makes it to 60 caps, while KKS Lech Poznań midfielder Karol Linetty – one of the brightest prospects in Polish football – is itching for a first competitive start.

Ireland rally round Keane
Events off the field threatened to overwhelm the occasion for the Republic of Ireland. First, coach Martin O'Neill and assistant Roy Keane were involved in a minor car accident, then – on the eve of the match – striker Robbie Keane learned of a terrible family tragedy involving the death of two of his cousins. Ireland vice-captain John O'Shea said: "It's very sad news and our thoughts are with the family." Two points adrift of third-ranked Scotland, Ireland can ill afford to lose in Dublin.

Group F
 Finland running out of time
On a three-match losing streak, Finland are keen to close the four-point gap between them and third-placed Hungary, who will hope to gain ground on section leaders Romania and Northern Ireland, who face off in Belfast tonight. Hungary are unbeaten in four Group F outings and have not conceded in the last three. They have not scored many either – four in five UEFA EURO 2016 qualifiers so far – but a 4-0 friendly thrashing of Lithuania last week may signal better to come.

Highlights: Romania v Northern Ireland

Romania's lucky number
Romania overcame Northern Ireland 2-0 in Bucharest back in November, and have shipped just one goal in the European Qualifiers, but coach Anghel Iordănescu has not looked too confident in recent days, worn down by injury worries concerning Răzvan Raţ, Florin Andone and Lucian Sănmărtean. Striker Claudiu Keşerü has declared himself fit, though, and feels fate may be on his side. "We play on 13 June, we have 13 points and my lucky shirt number is 13," he announced on Facebook. "Go Romania!"

Greece seek Faroese redemption
Not for the first time, the Faroe Islands caused Greece problems this week – their flight north on Thursday having to be diverted back to Copenhagen due to fog at Vagar Airport. A last-minute injury meant playmaker Kostas Fortounis was not aboard, coach Sergio Markarián hoping his players can avenge the humiliating 1-0 home defeat they suffered against the same opponents last November. "We lost to a weaker team that played better than us," concluded Greece captain Vasilis Torosidis. Never again?

Highlights: Portugal v Armenia

Group I
 Hovsepyan's Armenia hope
Sargis Hovsepyan's first game in charge of Armenia is certainly not an easy one, yet there are some encouraging signs: his team only lost 1-0 in the return fixture in November, Cristiano Ronaldo the man on target, while these countries' two previous encounters in Yerevan produced draws. Portugal, though, have won their last four qualifiers away from home, and – with victories by one-goal margins in their last four European Qualifiers – have proved supremely efficient.
 Armenia v Portugal – 18.00CET

Highlights: Serbia v Denmark

Denmark doing fine
A 2-1 friendly success over Serbia's neighbours Montenegro earlier in the weak augured well for the Danes, who are eager to keep pace with Portugal at the the top of the five-team section. Ugandan-born FC Midtjylland winger Pione Sisto could be in line for a competitive debut for Denmark, while Serbia – 4-1 victors against Azerbaijan last Sunday – want to get back to winning ways. The nations meet again in the UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals in the Czech Republic on 23 June.
