World powers to contest final

Matchday 3 round-up: Germany and the United States won again as the Algarve Cup group stage concluded.

China beaten
Having already clinched Group A, Germany made it three wins out of three last night by defeating China 2-0. Sandra Smisek gave the reigning world and European champions the lead on 18 minutes and Pia Wunderlich put the match out of China's reach ten minutes from time. "I was not pleased with our performance but we cashed in our chances," said coach Tina Theune-Meyer. "Maybe the fact that we made a few changes had a bearing on how we played."

In-form US
The United States had no problem finding their rhythm as they were 4-0 winners against a Denmark side who travelled to Portugal with high hopes of claiming glory themselves ahead of this summer's UEFA European Women's Championship. US captain Kristine Lilly's goal direct from a corner in the 58th minute completed the scoring after Christine Wells (2) and Abby Wambach struck before the interval.

'Continue building'
Denmark coach Poul Højmose, whose side did not register a shot until the 84th minute, said: "We had to make a couple of defensive changes due to Gitte Andersen's minor injury but we still shouldn't have produced a performance like that. It's important for us not to panic now but to continue building towards the European Championship this summer."

Dusang winner
The Danes finished third in Group B with France sealing second spot behind the Americans with a 2-1 victory against Finland. The Finns, who open their UEFA WOMEN'S EURO 2005™ campaign against hosts England on Sunday 5 June, opened the scoring in the 28th minute when a shot from range deflected in off French player Corinne Diacre. However, Marinette Pichon (51 minutes) and Sandrine Dusang (84) won the game for Les Bleues who now face Sweden in the third-placed play-off.

First goal
The Swedes finished second behind Germany in Group A after drawing 1-1 against Norway on Sunday. The Norwegians needed a win to overtake their Scandinavian rivals but fell behind to Caroline Seger's first international goal in the 18th minute. The youngster was later taken off with mild concussion but still earned high praise from the coaching staff. Norway's dominance finally paid off in the 83rd minute when Marita Kaufman equalised.

Fine run
Norway face the Danes for fifth place with the bottom nation in Group A, China, tackling Group C winners England in the play-off for seventh. England midfield player Fara Williams scored twice against Mexico and Jody Handley, Rachel Yankey and Sue Smith also registered as Hope Powell's side recorded their sixth win in succession - England's best run for 18 years.

Finland-Mexico
They will hope to extend that sequence when the tournament concludes on Tuesday. Finland will play the Group C runners-up Mexico in the play-off for ninth, with Portugal no doubt looking for revenge in the play-off for eleventh as they tackle Northern Ireland, 2-1 winners against the hosts yesterday.
