Lech dethrone Legia as Polish champions

KKS Lech Poznań are celebrating their first Polish title since 2009/10 after recording a 0-0 draw against Wisła Kraków to remain ahead of defending champions Legia Warszawa on the last day of action.

League winners for the last two seasons, Legia went into the final day trailing Lech by three points and hoping their rivals would stumble at the last hurdle. Legia did their bit, beating Górnik Zabrze 2-0, but Lech held firm against Wisła to claim the point they needed in front of a capacity crowd of 41,556.

"It's still difficult to believe that we're champions," said forward Dawid Kownacki, whose side leapfrogged Legia in the play-offs. "I'll need a couple of hours before fully understanding what we did. We believed we could Legia, but the turning point was our loss to them in the Polish Cup final in early May. We lost at the National Stadium but felt we had been the better side. We're extremely happy now."

Aside from their 2-1 cup final defeat, Lech faced Legia three times in the league, winning twice and drawing once. Crowned for the seventh time, Maciej Skorża's charges can now look forward to a berth in UEFA Champions League qualifying next term, with Legia already assured of a UEFA Europa League place following their cup triumph.
