Tim Borowski has been forced temporarily out of Werder Bremen's push for honours in the Bundesliga and UEFA Cup after he tore ligaments in his left knee.

Tim Borowski has been forced temporarily out of Werder Bremen's push for honours in the Bundesliga and UEFA Cup after the Germany midfielder tore ligaments in his left knee on Sunday.

Schaaf setback
Borowski sustained the damage during Bremen's 2-2 league draw at VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach and faces a lay-off of several weeks at least. Coach Thomas Schaaf said of the 26-year-old's injury: "Tim will not be available for quite a while and it is very disappointing." The player himself, who has scored twice in 16 Bundesliga appearances this season, added: "I have not given up hope of getting back for the title run-in."

Celta date
Bremen lie third in the German table, six points behind leaders FC Schalke 04, and they will face Spanish side RC Celta de Vigo in the UEFA Cup Round of 16 next month. Striker Miroslav Klose could yet be a doubt for the Celta first leg on 8 March, as he has a bacterial infection which is being treated with antibiotics.
