Laurent Blanc has signed a two-year contract extension, tying him to Paris Saint-Germain until 2018.

PSG racked up a 16th consecutive win against Lyon on Wednesday, and the board have underlined their confidence that Blanc is the man to lead them to success on the European stage with fresh terms.

"I thank the club for their confidence," said the 50-year-old. "I'm honoured to work for such an ambitious club, managing such talented players. It's a big show of confidence and I'm delighted with that. The club is ambitious and we'll do everything to reach our goals."

Wednesday's victory took Paris through to the French Cup quarter-finals and they are well on course for a third successive title under Blanc. They have the French League Cup final to look forward to on 23 April but the immediate focus is on their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie with Chelsea – the first leg is at home on Tuesday.

Club president Nasser al-Khelaifi admits that handing Blanc a new deal was an easy decision. "I'm extremely proud and happy that Laurent Blanc continues with our club. In three years with us he has won trophies, beaten records. All the signs were pointing to choosing stability."
