Tottenham pick up Pienaar from Everton

UEFA Champions League contenders Tottenham Hotspur FC have bolstered their midfield with the signing of South African international Steven Pienaar from Premier League rivals Everton FC.

South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar has moved from Everton FC to Tottenham Hotspur FC.

Pienaar, whose contract at Goodison Park was due to expire at the end of the campaign, agreed terms with Tottenham on Tuesday despite interest from Premier League titleholders Chelsea FC. The 28-year-old former AFC Ajax and Borussia Dortmund player joined Everton in 2007, initially on a season-long loan, and has since made 104 top-flight appearances.

Harry Redknapp's Tottenham side finished top of UEFA Champions League Group A – ahead of holders FC Internazionale Milano – and will meet AC Milan in the round of 16. The first leg is at San Siro on 15 February, with the White Hart Lane return on 9 March.
