FC Internazionale Milano have enhanced their midfield options by signing Colombian international Fredy Guarín from FC Porto and Italy's Angelo Palombo from UC Sampdoria, while allowing Thiago Motta to leave for Paris Saint-Germain FC.

Guarín and Palombo both arrive in Milan on loan with the option of making the deals permanent in the summer – in Palombo's case, for a €4m transfer fee. They will be joined at San Siro by a third addition to Claudio Ranieri's squad in Brazil Under-20 defender Juan, who has been recruited from SC Internacional on a contract until 2016.

Making way for the three newcomers are midfielders Motta and Sulley Muntari. Brazilian-born Italian international Motta, 29, departs for PSG after an Inter career spanning 11 goals in 55 Serie A games and capped by his contribution to the Nerazzurri's glorious 2009/10 campaign when they lifted the Scudetto, Coppa Italia and UEFA Champions League titles. Meanwhile, Ghanaian international Muntari, 27, has moved across the city to AC Milan where he will play out the remaining six months of his four-year Inter contract.

Of the new arrivals, the 25-year-old Guarín was part of the Porto side that claimed a treble of Portuguese Liga, Portuguese Cup and UEFA Europa League last season. In total he scored 11 goals in 63 league games for the Dragons, whom he represented twice in this term's UEFA Champions League group stage. Guarín came to Europe in 2006 after spells with CD Envigado FC in his homeland and CA Boca Juniors in Argentina. He had two campaigns in France with AS Saint-Étienne before landing at Porto in 2008.

Palombo, capped 22 times by Italy, originally decided to stay with Sampdoria for a tenth season despite their relegation to Serie B last May. However, the 30-year-old now makes a swift return to the top flight and will share the Inter dressing room with 2011 FIFA U-20 World Cup winner Juan, a centre-back cum left-back who also won the 2010 Copa Libertadores with Internacional.

On a busy day for the Beneamata, Brazilian international playmaker Coutinho, 19, was loaned to RCD Espanyol until the end of the campaign, and fellow midfielder MacDonald Mariga was uprooted from a loan stint at Real Sociedad de Fútbol and sent to Parma FC – where the Kenya midfielder, 24, previously played from 2007–10.

Inter face Olympique de Marseille in the UEFA Champions League round of 16, visiting France for the opener on 22 February, with the tie concluding at San Siro on 13 March.
