SL Benfica midfielder Carlos Martins has signed a three-year contract extension with the Lisbon club.

The 30-year-old, who last season helped Granada CF avoid relegation from the Spanish Liga while on loan at the Estadio Nuevo Los Cármenes, is now tied to the Eagles until the summer of 2016. "I'm very pleased and I thank everyone at the club for having put their trust in me," said Martins.

Martins joined Benfica ahead of the 2008/09 campaign following a single season with RC Recreativo de Huelva. Having withdrawn from Portugal's UEFA EURO 2012 squad with a calf injury, he is now fully fit and has impressed coach Jorge Jesus in pre-season with four goals in seven games.
