Goals fly in for Málaga, Madrid and Arsenal

Málaga CF, Arsenal FC, Real Madrid CF and FC Porto all registered second successive wins on Wednesday on a night of special goals and outstanding goalkeeping displays.

Málaga CF continued their dream debut season in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday after chalking up a second victory while three other clubs, including Real Madrid CF, also moved on to six points.

On a night of special goals, Eliseu hit two differing yet sublime strikes as Málaga followed up their 3-0 matchday one win against FC Zenit St Petersburg with an identical result at RSC Anderlecht. In Group C's other game, a superlative goalkeeping display by Christian Abbiati helped his AC Milan side to a 3-2 success at Zenit. The Rossoneri had surrended a two-goal lead and Zenit were pushing for a winner but an inspired Abbiati kept them at bay and Tomáš Hubočan's late own goal proved decisive.

Real Madrid were meeting AFC Ajax for the third group stage running. The Dutch champions had gone down 4-0 and 3-0 in the previous two seasons, and it was a similar story this time. They lost 4-1 as Cristiano Ronaldo struck a hat-trick and Karim Benzema a wondrous overhead kick. José Mourinho's team are two points clear in Group D after an 90th-minute penalty by Mario Balotelli rescued a 1-1 draw for Manchester City FC, for whom Joe Hart was in superb form, at home to Borussia Dortmund.

Arsenal FC have maximum points after a 3-1 triumph against Olympiacos FC and it looked as though FC Schalke 04 would join them at the Group B summit but they were denied by a late Montpellier Hérault SC equaliser. In Group A, FC Dynamo Kyiv bounced back from their opening defeat at Paris Saint-Germain FC by beating GNK Dinamo Zagreb 2-0 while James Rodríguez scored late to give Porto a 1-0 win against PSG and put them top of the section.
