Ronaldo looks to maintain scoring run against Buffon

The final will be the fifth time Gianluigi Buffon and Cristiano Ronaldo have met in the UEFA Champions League – the Portuguese has scored in each of the four previous encounters.

Juventus No1 Gianluigi Buffon has been in phenomenal form this season, conceding just three goals in 990 minutes of UEFA Champions League football. In the final, though, he will come up against Real Madrid talisman Cristiano Ronaldo, who has found the net in every club game he has played against Italy's venerable goalkeeper.

  • Ronaldo notched both goals in the only victory of his career against a team with Buffon between the posts. He grounded and rounded Juve's glovesman for his first, before scoring from the spot – high and to his left – despite Buffon going the right way.

  • Ronaldo's chief contribution was a move started and finished by the Portuguese, Karim Benzema the man in the middle. It was the Frenchman's cute inside pass that laid on Madrid's No7 for a tidy first-time finish past the approaching Buffon.

  • Perhaps one of the least eye-catching goals of Ronaldo's glittering career, this was the simplest of headers from James Rodríguez's pinpoint cross. Buffon just could not get across quickly enough from his near post.

  • Giorgio Chiellini felled James and Ronaldo made no mistake with the ensuing penalty, firing high down the middle as Buffon dived to his right. It looked decisive at the time, but Álvaro Morata would have the last word for Juve.

Buffon and Ronaldo have met only once in international football, in a friendly in March 2004. Italy won 2-1 on that occasion, with Ronaldo failing to score after coming off the bench to earn his fourth cap for Portugal.
