Ümit leaving Bremen behind

Werder Bremen have released Turkish right-back Ümit Davala, and have received disappointing news about highly-regarded left-back Christian Schulz.
Werder Bremen have begun preparing for the second part of their UEFA Champions League challenge by releasing Ümit Davala, while there is disappointing news for Christian Schulz.

Injury woe
Ümit, the 32-year-old Turkish international, will leave the Bundesliga club in the winter break and is keen for a fresh start. The right-back, capped 41 times by his country, is not certain where he will continue his career, having struggled to make an impression because of a succession of injuries.

Instant success
Ümit joined Bremen in summer 2003 and played 22 times in their double-winning 2003/04 season. However, opportunities were limited in the 2004/05 campaign and he has since made only one Bundesliga appearance, with his last game coming in the UEFA Champions League qualifier at FC Basel 1893 on 10 August.

Schulz blow
Meanwhile, left-back Schulz faces a race against time to be fit for Bremen's first knockout round ties against Juventus on 22 February and 7 March. The 22-year-old, who featured in all six group matches, suffered a calf injury in the 5-1 victory against Panathinaikos FC and will miss the winter training camp in January.
