Fred makes a dummy of PSV

Brazil forward Fred marked the birth of his first child with a wonder goal in Olympique Lyonnais' UEFA Champions League win against PSV Eindhoven.

It's a girl!
The Brazilian international's preparations for the first knockout round tie against PSV Eindhoven had entailed holding his wife's hand in a Lyon hospital. However, the arrival of baby Geovanna yesterday afternoon allowed the 22-year-old to reach the Stade Gerland before kick-off – and even before his team-mates, thanks to a police escort through the French city.

Wonder goal
But with phone calls to make, the new dad was left on the bench by coach Gérard Houllier, only coming on as a 65th-minute substitute for John Carew. Yet not even a late entrance could deny Fred on his "special day". With his team leading through two goals from Tiago and one from Sylvain Wiltord - and 4-0 up on aggregate - Fred took his cue. In the 90th minute, a magical sidestep past a PSV defender was the prelude to a fabulous left-footed strike from the edge of the area.

Celebration
It was Lyon's 100th UEFA Champions League goal, capping their progress to the quarter-finals for the third year running, and Fred marked it in style. Producing a baby's dummy from the lining of his shorts and putting it in his mouth, he updated, with a little help from his team-mates, the 'rockaby' celebration patented by compatriot Bebeto at the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

Feeling lucky
"I thank God for blessing my wife who, along with my daughter, is healthy. At the start of the game I felt anxious, but I had so much support from everyone that I always felt that I was going to score," said the man of the moment.
