FC Bayern München have secured promising 18-year-old defender Mats Hummels on a contract until summer 2009.

'Wonderful job'
The defender has been with the club since 1995 and made his first-team debut at the age of 17 in the German League Cup semi-final against FC Schalke 04 this summer, as Bayern won on penalties after a goalless draw. "He did a wonderful job," coach Felix Magath said at the time.

Exams
Hummels will continue to study for his school exams and will still train with the youth team as well as the senior squad. Youth coach Werner Kern said: "It is important that he has good final exams. [General manager] Uli Hoeness wanted this too." He becomes the eighth player in the senior squad from Bayern's youth ranks alongside Owen Hargreaves, Philipp Lahm, Andreas Ottl, Christian Lell, Michael Rensing, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Stephan Fürstner.
