Mixed emotions for Genk and Valencia

Coach Mario Been declared himself "extremely happy" after KRC Genk produced a resilient defensive display to earn a goalless draw at home to Valencia CF in their Group E opener.

Mario Been, Genk coach
I am extremely happy. We had a good team plan, worked extremely hard and it worked out the way we intended. They had chances, but we so did we. In that sense it was an open match. The pressure at this level is very high, people have been talking about this for weeks but the players handled it extremely well. At the beginning we had some problems on the left but after the break we corrected it pretty well. We were good in the second half, we dared to play football and gave away very little. All that against a team like Valencia.

Now we are facing games against Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen and we will have to become stronger in order to get positive results from those matches
Unai Emery

Unai Emery, Valencia coach
We haven't achieved a good result. We wanted to come here and win and we didn't manage that. Genk played a great defensive game and they adjusted to us as we expected them to. Part of our inability to break them down was due to their defensive work. It's going to be a season of constant preparation followed by tests for us. I thought my team did fine in terms of controlling the ball and withstanding any threat from our opponent.

In the overall scheme of things the team functioned well. When we changed from 4-3-3 to 4-4-2 we didn't penetrate their area as much and they pushed upfield more. Now we are facing games against Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen and we will have to become stronger in order to get positive results from those matches.
