"I'll do my best to share with everyone how much I love this city, a city of passion, a city of sport; where life is easy to lead," said the 44-year-old as he accepted the challenge from mayor Jean-Luc Moudenc. He was, Mr Moudenc explained, a "natural choice".

Barthez was born in Lavelanet, just south of the city, and began his long career at Toulouse FC in 1990 before leaving in 1992. He lifted the FIFA World Cup and UEFA European Championship with France, the UEFA Champions League with Olympique de Marseille and won league titles in France and England. He has since returned to the Toulouse area.

Barthez's role in Toulouse follows similar appointments of Jérémie Janot in Saint-Etienne and Alain Giresse in Bordeaux. The ten host cities will all select ambassadors ahead of the tournament.
