Edvaldsson resigns as Iceland coach

Atli Edvaldsson has stepped down as Iceland coach after four years at the helm.

Atli Edvaldsson has resigned as coach of the Iceland national team.

Temporary replacement
The Football Association of Iceland (KSÍ) have instructed chairman Eggert Magnusson to search for a new coach, but until a permanent replacement can be found, Asgeir Sigurvinsson, who played for 1. Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart and is currently a technical consultant and a member of the national committee, will control the team.

Four years in charge
Edvaldsson had been in control of the national side for four years, having previously worked with the Under-21 side. He took over from Gudjon Thordarson in 1999, but has recently been heavily criticised in sections of the press and decided to resign in the hope that the team will receive more support.

Successful playing career
Sigurvinsson won 45 international caps and, in a successful playing career, also featured for FC Bayern München. His first game in charge will be the UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying game against Faroe Islands in Reykjavik on 7 June. Iceland currently lie fourth in Group 5 with three points from three games.
