Chivu loan deal agreed

Cristian Chivu has been loaned to AS Roma for the next four months ahead of a permanent move from AFC Ajax.

Transfer to be completed
The 22-year-old will play in the Italian capital until the 2003/04 winter break with negotiations ongoing to complete the transfer in January. Ajax originally agreed to sell the Romanian international to Roma in July, with Chivu signing a five-year contract.

Ajax statement
"After receiving another payment, Ajax and AS Roma agreed on the immediate loan of Cristian Chivu," an official Ajax statement said today.

Loan until January
Roma's director of sport, Franco Baldini, said: "I can confirm that we have reached an agreement with Ajax. The loan until January is a way of having more time to find the guarantees for the payment that Ajax required to finalise the deal on a permanent basis.

'Just a formality'
"We have done everything we had to do and it will just be a formality. We have already received the international clearance allowing Chivu to play in Italy and abroad. Chivu is a Roma player."

Missed opening day
Because of discussions over the financing of the deal, Chivu's future has been uncertain. He missed yesterday's opening-day win against Udinese Calcio but will be eligible to play in Roma's next match against Brescia Calcio on 14 September.
