Midtjylland, Sion, Slovan Liberec and PAOK caused some of the biggest upsets, Franco Di Santo scored a 17-minute hat-trick and Giuseppe Rossi ended a 17-month wait.

There were surprises, maiden wins and quickfire hat-tricks on UEFA Europa League matchday two.

Thursday's first set of fixtures stood out for Franco Di Santo's 17-minute treble for Schalke – the fifth fastest in UEFA Europa League history – Giuseppe Rossi's first goal since May 2014 in a 4-0 success for Fiorentina, and Qarabağ's defeat of Anderlecht.

Victory for the Azerbaijani champions was a shock in its own right but was perhaps overshadowed by Midtjylland's 3-1 triumph over Club Brugge in Belgium. There were other upsets, too, Slovan Liberec victorious at Marseille, Molde holding Ajax in Norway, Sion earning a point against Liverpool at Anfield and PAOK sharing the spoils with Borussia Dortmund, who are now 14 matches unbeaten under Thomas Tuchel.
