Osijek claimed the biggest scalp of the round in PSV Eindhoven, but the three other European champions involved – Crvena zvezda, Marseille and Milan (the Rossoneri in front of a UEFA Europa League qualifying/play-off record 65,763 crowd at San Siro) – all progressed to the play-offs.
Petar Bočkaj's first-half free-kick extended the Croatian side's aggregate advantage as PSV were eliminated. The other continental title holders marched on however, as did Athletic Club, Everton and Fenerbahçe, but Bundesliga representatives Freiburg were knocked out by Slovenian team Domžale.
Zenit, who lifted this trophy in 2007/08, survived to live another round despite a home defeat by Bnei Yehuda. No such luck for 1996 UEFA Cup runners-up Bordeaux, though, who lost on away goals to their 1985 counterparts Videoton of Hungary.
Swedish debutants Östersund, Galatasaray's second qualifying round conquerors, also advanced. Fellow Allsvenskan club AIK succumbed to a 121st-minute goal at Braga, the 2011 finalists.

The UEFA Europa League play-off draw – which contains 29 teams that have come from the third qualifying round as well as 15 transferring from UEFA Champions League qualification – will be streamed live on UEFA.com from 13:00CET on Friday.
