FC Schalke 04 will be without defender Tomasz Waldoch until the new year after the former Polish international underwent knee surgery.

Permanent solution
Waldoch has been experiencing occasional problems with his knee for some time and Schalke are hoping that the operation will provide a permanent solution. The defender retired from international football following Poland's 2002 FIFA World Cup campaign after earning 74 caps for his country.

UEFA Cup absentee
The German side are resigned to being without Waldoch for at least four months and he is certain to miss Schalke's UEFA Cup second-round tie against Legia Warszawa, with the first leg taking place at the Wojska Polskiego stadium on Thursday.
