Ten-man VfL Wolfsburg secured their place in the UEFA Europa League round of 32 as Group H runners-up thanks to a 3-0 win at LOSC Lille.

LOSC started sharper despite going into the game in poor form domestically compared to their high-flying Bundesliga opponents. Idrissa Gueye headed against a post, and Divock Origi then fired in a low cross that Ryan Mendes only narrowly failed to connect with, before the on-loan Liverpool FC forward brought a diving save from Diego Benaglio.

The visitors did begin to exert pressure as the break approached, but it was still a surprise to see them go in front. Kevin De Bruyne's magnificent reverse pass to Ivan Perišić made the goal as it wrong-footed the LOSC defence, and when the former Borussia Dortmund man cut the ball back, Vieirinha was in enough space to be able to fire into the far corner with almost the last kick of the half.

A swerving Luiz Gustavo drive parried by Vincent Enyeama and a Bas Dost header from the subsequent corner might have given the visitors breathing space, which would have been welcome after midfielder Josuha Guilavogui was sent off for a second bookable offence in the space of eight minutes.

Succour for Dieter Hecking's men came just ten minutes later, however, when Ricardo Rodriguez bent a free-kick beyond Enyeama. The closing stages would have been more dramatic had Benaglio not pushed out Origi's 76th-minute penalty. Instead, Rodriguez added a third from the spot after Pape Souaré handled, with Wolfsburg joining Group H winners Everton FC in the knockout phase.
