Who has won EURO as a player and coach?

Only one man has won a UEFA European Championship as player and coach: Step forward, Berti Vogts.

The former Borussia Mönchengladbach defender was a member of the victorious West Germany squad in 1972. He did not get any playing time in Belgium but, after hanging up his boots, Vogts was in the thick of things as he guided Die Mannschaft to runners-up at Sweden '92. He and Germany went one better four years later, defeating the Czech Republic in the final of EURO '96.

Who could join the club at EURO 2024?

There are two former winners among the coaches at UEFA EURO 2024:

Didier Deschamps (France)
Captained Les Bleus to victory at UEFA EURO 2000. He is only the third man to win a FIFA World Cup as a player (France, 1998) and coach (Russia, 2018). Like Vogts, he led the national team to the final in his first EURO as coach in 2016 but did not follow up with a victory at the 2020 edition as Les Bleus bowed out to Switzerland on penalties in the round of 16.

Ronald Koeman (Netherlands)
Marshalled the Oranje back line at the EURO '88 final. Koeman took charge of the Netherlands for the first time in 2018 and steered them to the UEFA Nations League final in 2019. He took charge of Barcelona after guiding his country to EURO 2020 before returning to the Netherlands job in 2023.

Which other EURO 2024 coaches have been to a EURO as players?

England boss Gareth Southgate helped the Three Lions reach the semi-finals of EURO '96 on home turf, where they lost in a dramatic penalty shoot-out against Vogts' Germany.

The only other coaches currently slated to feature at EURO 2024 who have also been to the finals as players are Serbia boss Dragan Stojković (who was 19 when he went to the 1984 finals with Yugoslavia) and Switzerland's Murat Yakin (who retired from international football after playing at EURO 2004).
