Andrejevs set to lead Latvia

Jurijs Andrejevs is poised to become the new coach of Latvia after unanimous endorsement by his peers.

Starkovs leaving
The Latvia Football Federation (LFF) coaches' committee gave its approval to Skonto FC coach Andrejevs replacing the outgoing Aleksandrs Starkovs. Starkovs will leave the national-team set-up after the FIFA World Cup qualifier against Liechtenstein on 17 November to focus on his commitments with FC Spartak Moskva, paving the way for his assistant to assume full control of the side.

Lifelong ambition
The LFF board will confirm Andrejevs' appointment at a meeting on 1 December. The coach said: "I have not hidden the fact I wanted this job, as it has been a lifelong ambition. I understand the honour and responsibility of the role. However, I want it and am ready for it. I would like to show people that our appearance at [UEFA] EURO 2004™ was not a one-off."
