'First time for everything'
"There's a first time for everything and today we managed to win in Albania," said coach Fatih Terim, whose side now face a two-leg decider against another second-placed team on 12 and 16 November, with the draw to be made on Friday.
Record-breaker
The pre-game ceremony saw tribute paid to Albania's legendary goalkeeper Foto Strakosha, who made a record 76 appearances for his country. The home side seemed inspired, and looked the likelier scorers in the first half.
Volkan saves
Erjon Bogdani had two clear opportunities to open the scoring for Albania in the 15th and 23rd minutes, but both times was denied by goalkeeper Volkan Demirel, while captain Igli Tare also spurned a presentable chance.
Defensive mix-up
Turkey showed greater attacking urgency after the break, and Tümer scored the decisive goal just before the hour mark. He capitalised on a defensive mix-up on the edge of the box to fire past Elion Lika in the Albanian goal.
Sparky substitutes
Albania coach Hans-Peter Briegel introduced substitutes Redi Jupi and Edvin Murati as the home side chased the game, and the pair injected freshness and pace without ever inspiring an equaliser.
Greece and Denmark gone
Turkey finish on 23 points from 12 games, two behind group winners Ukraine but enough to hold off Denmark and Greece, who both won their closing fixtures in this closely-contested pool.
