Erik Jendrišek scored seven minutes from time as Slovakia earned their first-ever victory in Prague against their neighbours.
Šesták opener
Before tonight Slovakia had not beaten the Czech Republic in any game since 1997, but with coach Vladimír Weiss making five changes to the side defeated 4-0 by England in Saturday's Wembley friendly, they took a Czech defence shorn of suspended captain Tomáš Ufjaluši to task. The visitors duly took the lead after 23 minutes as Filip Hološko found Stanislav Šesták, who turned Zdeněk Grygera to score.
Own goal
Boos from the home crowd spurred the Czechs to respond, and they were given an equaliser seven minutes later when Marek Jankulovski nodded Jaroslav Plašil's corner on at the near post, with unfortunate defender Martin Škrtel heading past his own goalkeeper, Ján Mucha. The hosts dominated after the break, with David Jarolím rattling an upright with their best effort.
Late winner
However, they were hit with a sucker punch in the 83rd minute as 1. FC Kaiserslautern striker Jendrišek eluded the home defence. Goalkeeper Petr Čech was equal to his first attempt, yet could not prevent him netting the rebound. Weiss's Slovakia entertain San Marino in their next Group 3 match on 6 June, but the Czechs must wait until 5 September for their next fixture – away to Slovakia.
