Serhiy Nazarenko scored in both halves as Ukraine claimed a 2-1 victory against Kazakhstan to move level with second-placed Croatia in FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 6.
Decent chances
Ukraine, missing captain Andriy Shevchenko and centre-back Olexandr Kucher after the 2-2 draw in Zagreb on Saturday, fell behind in the 19th minute as Tanat Nusserbayev headed in a clearance from defender Andriy Rusol. The home side hit back through FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk midfielder Nazarenko, who curled in a free-kick 14 minutes later. After Andriy Voronin and Artem Milevskiy had both squandered decent chances to put Ukraine in front, Nazarenko did just that two minutes into the second half by driving the ball between the goalkeeper's legs after being teed up by Milevskiy.
'No pressure'
"There was no pressure on Kazakhstan and you could see they were at ease," said Ukraine coach Oleksiy Mykhailychenko, whose side trail Croatia on goal difference after seven qualifiers in a section dominated by England. "We created lots of chances in attack but we lacked luck and sharpness to extend our lead. To tell the truth, I couldn't recognise some players in my team today. It is a good lesson for us: we need to learn how to handle small teams that are happy to get a draw."
