Duff ends Ireland career on 100 caps

Fulham FC midfielder Damien Duff has retired from international football after the 33-year-old won his 100th and final cap for the Republic of Ireland at UEFA EURO 2012.

Damien Duff has followed the example of his Republic of Ireland team-mate Shay Given by retiring from international football.

The Fulham FC winger won his 100th and final cap in Ireland's last UEFA EURO 2012 game against Italy and has now decided to concentrate on his club career. "It has always been a source of immense pride for me to represent my country," said the 33-year-old, who scored eight times for the Republic.

"I found it very difficult to make this decision, not least for the respect in which I hold Giovanni Trapattoni," he added. "I have enjoyed so many good times in the green jersey and want to thank everyone involved, especially the fans for making the last 14 years so special."

Duff has, therefore, not been selected in the 23-man squad announced by Trapattoni for Ireland's opening FIFA World Cup qualifier against Kazakhstan in Astana on 7 September. Goalkeeper Given revealed his decision to quit international football ten days ago.
