Hazard gives Belgium the points against FYROM

Eden Hazard's moment of individual inspiration was enough to give Belgium victory against the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and keep them on top of Group A.

After a first half in which Belgium had most of the play but did not create many chances, Hazard came up trumps just after the hour in this FIFA World Cup qualifier. The visitors rallied after falling behind yet could not force an equaliser and remain second bottom of the section.

Belgium, with captain and centre-half Vincent Kompany back after a two-month injury lay-off, were in control from the start in Brussels. However, the hosts struggled to penetrate FYROM's well-organised defence and lone striker Christian Benteke was not getting much joy in attack.

Indeed, while Marc Wilmots's men won plenty of corners, they did not force a single save from goalkeeper Tome Pacovski in the opening period. The Red Devils were finding it equally tough following the break but, three minutes after he hit the bar, Hazard cut past two defenders before driving in what proved the winner. FYROM could not respond, and Belgium sit first in Group A, level on points with Croatia but with a superior goal difference.
