Cristiano Ronaldo equalled a UEFA European Championship scoring record with an added-time winner as Portugal picked up their first points in qualifying Group I with a 1-0 victory against Denmark at Parken.
Ronaldo headed in Ricardo Quaresma's cross in the fifth minute of added time to draw level with Turkey's Hakan Şükür and local hero Jon Dahl Tomasson as the competition's 22-goal leading scorers. More importantly for Portugal, it enabled Fernando Santos's side to put last month's home defeat by Albania behind them and inflict a first loss of the campaign on Denmark.
Portugal had the better of a lively opening period with Ronaldo a constant threat, only for him to come up against in-form Kasper Schmeichel in the Danish goal. Nani too went close with a header that flashed wide as Portugal pressed. For all of Portugal's probing, however, it was Denmark who produced the best chance of the half, Michael Krohn-Dehli curling a shot onto the far post five minutes before the break.
Six minutes after the restart Ronaldo was sent clear on the left side of the area, but Schmeichel was quickly off his line and the tall goalkeeper spread his arms and legs wide as his father used to do to keep out the forward's effort. Ronaldo, though, would have the last laugh, crashing in a header at the near post to snatch the points in added time after substitute Quaresma's pinpoint cross from the right.
