Löw unimpressed despite Germany success

Joachim Löw was less than satisfied with the world champions' display in beating Gibraltar, who were very proud of their improved showing according to coach Allen Bula.

Joachim Löw, Germany coach
I am not pleased because winning 4-0 is not enough and we scored too few goals. I expected more from the team, especially in the second half. In the first period we at least created chances, but after the interval we hardly had any. We lacked pace, stopped running and failed to pose big questions for our opponents. That's why I have to say that I am not pleased with the performance and the result.

The game against Spain [a friendly on Tuesday] will be different. They have a totally different way of playing, are way more attacking and have more individual quality. We will need to choose a different lineup and play a different game. I am seriously pondering a few changes in the new year, which is fundamental for our development. You can see that some players may be quite happy when this World Cup year is over. We have had the problems we expected and we are not where we want to be in the European Qualifiers.

Given the pressure you feel before a World Cup, even six months beforehand, it's no surprise that the intensity is dropping for some players. When things start again after the winter break, then I am sure the players will be fit again, physically and mentally. I had expected more from the one or two players who got a chance today – more danger in front of goal, more shots. In the first half we played a fast, positional game, but in the second we too often tried our luck through the centre.

I was not really impressed by Gibraltar. I have seen that they have learned how to defend over the course of the past few games. They always play like this. They are getting better in their defending the longer they are playing together, but had we played to our full capacity then Gibraltar would have conceded more goals.

Karim Bellarabi, Germany midfielder
We won 4-0 but I think we should have scored more goals – and we did actually try to get more goals. But the three points are the most important thing. We didn't take all of the chances that came our way and it is always difficult when their entire team is back defending their own goal, as there are fewer gaps to exploit. We wanted to use the wings and send in crosses and we managed to do that – we scored two goals that way. I think, in summary, we need to score more goals, but we did win 4-0 and we have to build on that.

We obviously want to put in a good performance in Spain and, of course, we want to win. That's what we will prepare for in the coming days, and then I think things will have gone well. Of course our aim is to progress further and to win every game we play – that goes without saying.

Allen Bula, Gibraltar coach
We are obviously very proud. Words cannot describe what I feel about my players and the back-room staff. We prepared to face the world champions, little Gibraltar, the smallest UEFA member. We needed to be solid at the back. I asked my players to show sheer determination and to give a gutsy performance. Obviously we didn't have much of the ball, it was more about defending. I asked them to give me 100% but also to give me a smile – it is not every day you get to play the world champions.

Liam [Walker] knew that [Manuel] Neuer usually comes out quite a bit and he has a great shot from anywhere on the field. What a goal that would have been, but it was a great save from the Germany captain.

There is still a long way to go. This is part of the team's development. We did not start off on the right foot in these qualifiers. I hope we have shut up quite a few people who said we do not deserve to be here. We are deserving and we will progress. Back home people will have great big smiles on their faces and be full of pride.

Walker on 'dream come true'

Liam Walker, Gibraltar forward
We are new to this, playing the world champions, obviously it's a prize to just be here. It's a dream come true to be able to play in games like these. It's something that a lot of professional players won't get to do. We're chuffed with the result to be honest and, like I say, you just need to take the positives and I think today was mainly all positives – so I think we are happy with how we played. We just had a game plan, to sit back – against a team like Germany you have to sit back.

Any chance they get they punish you. We went out with a game plan, stuck to it and obviously gave them a good match. I saw the chance was there [to have an effort on goal], I just didn't think about it and went for it. It's a strength of mine, scoring from distance, so obviously it was a brilliant save [by Manuel Neuer]. Like I say, you've just got to go out – first thing is enjoy it, play with heart and passion, give 100% every time – and each time hopefully get better, take positives and fix the negatives. Just keep going.
