Sanchez takes Northern Ireland job

Lawrie Sanchez has been appointed the new manager of Northern Ireland, replacing Sammy McIlroy.

'Proud and honoured'
Sanchez, who won three caps for Northern Ireland in the 1980s, has been out of work since his dismissal from English second division side Wycombe Wanderers FC last September. "I am delighted, proud and honoured to be chosen to manage Northern Ireland," said Sanchez, who is expected to appoint former Northern Ireland striker Gerry Armstrong as his assistant. He replaces Sammy McIlroy, who resigned in October.

Giantkilling feats
During his four years at Wycombe, which followed his first manager's job at Irish side Sligo Rovers FC, he took them on a memorable run to the FA Cup semi-final in 2001. Giantkilling is a specialist subject for Sanchez, whose headed goal memorably won Wimbledon FC the 1988 FA Cup final against Liverpool FC, and it could come in handy in his new job.

Goal drought
Northern Ireland finished bottom of their UEFA EURO 2004™ qualifying section and have not scored a goal in 1,242 minutes. In their 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying section, they will take on England and Wales, as well as Austria, Poland and Azerbaijan.
