Deisler suffers more World Cup woe

A knee injury looks set to deny FC Bayern München midfielder Sebastian Deisler a place in the FIFA World Cup for the second consecutive tournament.

FC Bayern München's Sebastian Deisler has been ruled out for the remainder of the season and this summer's FIFA World Cup after examinations revealed he requires surgery on his injured knee.

Six-month lay-off
Deisler will be out of action for six months according to the German Football Association, after an arthroscopy performed in the United States showed that the injury-prone midfielder must undergo surgery on his troublesome knee. It is the latest in a series of blows for the 26-year-old, who has already had four operations on his troubled right knee.

World Cup woe
One forced the former Hertha BSC Berlin winger to miss the last World Cup in Japan and the Korea Republic in 2002. He has now been denied the opportunity to represent the hosts this summer after suffering this latest knock during training with Bayern on Tuesday.
