The game will also form part of Germany's build-up for the following year's FIFA World Cup finals, for which they are automatically qualified as hosts. Northern Ireland, in Group 6 with England, Poland, Austria, Wales and Azerbaijan, have a break of almost five months between qualifiers against Poland on 30 March 2005 and Azerbaijan on 3 September.
Last visit
Northern Ireland last welcomed Germany in March 1999, for a UEFA EURO 2000™ qualifier won by the visitors, 3-0. Indeed, Northern Ireland are yet to beat Germany since unification after six meetings.
