Bulgaria sauntered to an emphatic friendly victory against Georgia as Hristo Stoitchkov's side began their rebuilding process in style after failing to reach the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Elsewhere, Estonia and Scotland fought back to earn draws while Belarus and F.Y.R. Macedonia claimed comeback wins, but Romania were denied by a last-gasp goal as uefa.com rounds up the friendly action.
Bulgaria 6-2 Georgia
Chavdar Yankov, Dimitar Berbatov and Svetoslav Todorov all scored twice as Bulgaria secured an impressive victory in Sofia. The writing was on the walls for the visitors as early as the second minute when Yankov broke the deadlock. The Hanover 96 midfielder added a second just before the half-hour and Berbatov then scored twice in 12 minutes either side of the interval. Todorov marked his return to international action with a goal on 63 minutes, and although Georgia reduced the deficit through Lasha Jakobia and Gogita Gogua, there was still time for Todorov to complete the scoring with an added-time penalty.
Scotland 1-1 United States
Heart of Midlothian FC defender Andy Webster scored his first international goal as Scotland secured a battling draw against the United States at Hampden Park. The home side were forced to come from behind after the visitors took the lead after just nine minutes when Josh Wolff converted from the penalty spot. Scotland levelled nine minutes before the interval when Webster headed Graham Alexander's free-kick past VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Kasey Keller and debutant Scott Brown came had a last-gasp effort ruled out for offside.
Romania 1-2 Ivory Coast
OGC Nice striker Bakary Koné scored deep into added time as FIFA World Cup qualifiers the Ivory Coast overcame an experimental Romania team in Le Mans. Romanian coach Victor Piturca gave a total of four players their debuts in France, but after keeping the African side at bay for the first half, PSV Eindhoven's on-loan striker Arouna Koné finally found a way through three minutes after the restart. The lead was short lived, however, as Adrian Iencsi equalised four minutes later and that looked to have secured a draw before Koné's last-gasp winner.
Finland 2-2 Estonia
Estonia came from two goals down to snatch a draw against Finland in Helsinki. Winger Daniel Sjölund opened the scoring for the home side with a curling free-kick after seven minutes, before Kari Arkivuo's deflected effort from Alexei Eremenko Jr's corner doubled the advantage 14 minutes after the restart. However, Estonia responded immediately when Dmitri Kruglov beat Mikko Kaven from the penalty spot two minutes later and gained an equaliser with five minutes remaining when Joel Lindpere raced clear to score.
Belarus 3-1 Latvia
Substitute Sergei Kornilenko was on target twice as Belarus overcame an early setback to earn victory against Latvia in Vitebsk. After absorbing a lot of early pressure, Aleksejs Višnakovs gave the visitors a surprise lead on 26 minutes, collecting Jurijs Laizans' pass and slotting past Vasili Khomutovski. The advantage lasted just two minutes, however, Vladzimir Korytko pulling Belarus level from close range. The same player set up half-time substitute Kornilenko to make it 2-1 after the interval and the FC Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk striker sealed the win in added time.
Liechtenstein 1-2 F.Y.R. Macedonia
Blaze Ilijoski and Ardijan Nuhiji were both on target in the last nine minutes as F.Y.R. Macedonia left it late against an impressive Liechtenstein side. The home team, on the back of their best ever qualifying campaign for a major tournament, continued that steady rise when Fabio D'Elia broke the deadlock on 35 minutes. But Ilioski equalised with time running out before Nuhi stole a last-gasp win in added time.
