Extra World Cup berth for Europe

European qualifying will have a new format after UEFA was awarded an extra place in the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup which will run from 4-19 October in Brazil.

Europe has been awarded an extra place in the 2008 FIFA Futsal World Cup, which will run from 4-19 October in Brazil.

Qualifying change
FIFA has decided to expand the finals from 16 nations to 20, and UEFA members will now make up six of that number, increased from five. Therefore instead of just the ten group winners moving through from the European qualifying round, the draw for which was made in September, they will be joined by the two best-runners-up in six rather than five two-legged play-offs. The 38 entrants include Spain, who last week defended their UEFA European Futsal Championship title in Porto and will be aiming for a third straight World Cup.
