The Valencia CF left-back Asier del Horno is to go under the knife after physiotherapy failed to cure the calf injury which ruled him out of Spain's FIFA World Cup campaign.
Long lay-off
The 25-year-old suffered the injury playing for Chelsea FC last season, and has not made a competitive appearance since 2 May when the English champions lost 1-0 at Blackburn Rovers FC. In the absence of Del Horno, who left Chelsea for the Mestalla over the summer, Valencia have made an excellent start in the Primera División and UEFA Champions League. The former Athletic Club Bilbao defender will have surgery next week.
