Injury strikes Liverpool duo

Liverpool FC are likely to be without Daniel Agger and Xabi Alonso for their next UEFA Champions League match after the pair sustained foot injuries.

Liverpool FC expect to be without Xabi Alonso and Daniel Agger for up to six weeks after the pair returned from international duty with foot injuries.

Stress fracture
Alonso did not figure in Spain’s 2-0 victory over Latvia while Agger started in defence for Denmark in their 4-0 defeat of Liechtenstein. However upon returning to Merseyside, scans have revealed the duo have both sustained stress fractures to metatarsal bones in their feet. The pair could now miss several Premier League fixtures as well as Liverpool’s next UEFA Champions League Group A fixture against Olympique de Marseille at Anfield on 3 October. A club statement said: "Neither player will require surgery but we expect them to be out of action for between four and six weeks. Xabi Alonso has suffered a stress fracture to the 4th metatarsal in his left foot and Daniel Agger has suffered a stress fracture to the 2nd metatarsal in his right foot."
