FC Barcelona defender Eric Abidal will play no part in Saturday's Spanish Liga showdown with Real Madrid CF after the 30-year-old suffered the recurrence of a groin injury in the UEFA Champions League triumph over Arsenal FC.

The French international is likely to be sidelined for about ten days after reopening scar tissue in his groin during Barcelona's 4-1 quarter-final victory on Tuesday. Abidal had only returned to action last weekend after a lay-off dating back to 6 February.

He limped off after 53 minutes of the Arsenal second leg, to be replaced by left-back Maxwell. The former AFC Ajax and FC Internazionale Milano player may now start against Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu – a match that brings together two clubs locked on 77 points at the top of the Liga standings.
