Alain Juppé, president of the Bordeaux metropolitan area, has been giving an update on UEFA EURO 2016, underlining his commitment to using the event as a platform for revitalisation, as was the case during the 1998 FIFA World Cup. The key points were:
- A recent study conducted by the Centre d'Economie et de Droit du Sport (CEDS) in Limoges has predicted an economic benefit of €126m for the region.
- The fan zone at Place des Quinconces has a capacity of 12,500 and two giant screens will show all 51 UEFA EURO 2016 matches (one of them is 162 square metres). It will be open 12.00CET to 01.00 each day.
- A call for cultural projects brought 150 applications, and a jury led by former France international Alain Giresse and ballet dancer Emmanuelle Grizot have selected 85 of them.
- On security, Alain Juppé says: "We won't let ourselves be terrorised: every mayor and state service agrees on that. We will savour these warm, festive moments, while taking all necessary measures."
- The fan zone will be heavily protected. The security perimeter will be doubled, the gates will have metal detectors and there will be searches at every entrance. There will be a large number of stewards and also video cameras.
Bordeaux will host four group matches and a quarter-final in its new arena, the Stade de Bordeaux:
11 June: Wales v Slovakia
14 June: Austria v Hungary
18 June: Belgium v Republic of Ireland
21 June: Croatia v Spain
2 July: Quarter-final
