Shakhtar call on Yaremchenko

Valeri Yaremchenko has been installed as the caretaker coach of FC Shakhtar Donetsk.

Valeri Yaremchenko has been installed as the caretaker coach of FC Shakhtar Donetsk, after the Ukrainian club's chairman Rinat Akhmetov accepted Nevio Scala's resignation.

Heavy defeat
Italian coach Scala quit Shakhtar after their 5-1 defeat at the hands of FK Austria Wien in the first round of the UEFA Cup on Tuesday and Yaremchenko, who is a sports director at the club, was in charge of training on Friday.

Shakhtar veteran
Yaremchenko made a name for himself as a Shakhtar player during the 1970s and helped them to two USSR Cup successes. He played 13 seasons for Shakhtar, before graduating from the Higher Coaching School in Moscow and starting his career as a coach in 1982.

Varied career
He was in charge of the Syrian national team between 1985 and 1987, and then coached FC Kolos Krasnodar and FC Kremin Kremenchuk. Yaremchenko also had two spells with Shakhtar, between 1990-94 and 1996-1999; finishing second in Ukrainian standings behind rivals FC Dynamo Kyiv on five occasions. In October 2001, he served a short spell at Shakhtar as caretaker coach after Viktor Prokopenko resigned from the club.

Winter break
"We are looking for a western coach," vice-president Mark Levitsky said. "It is certain that the next coach will be a world-famous specialist." However, Yaremchenko will remain in charge at least until the winter break in Ukraine.
