Bone fractured
The 32-year-old Spaniard injured his right foot during a training camp last week. After a scan showed that he had fractured a small bone in the foot, he underwent surgery on Sunday and is now in plaster. He should be fit for the start of the Dutch club's UEFA Cup campaign on 16 September, but not the Eredivisie kick-off on 13 August.
First-round entry
"He is expected to return sooner than the earlier expected absence of six weeks," read an Alkmaar statement. The club finished fifth in the Eredivisie last season and join the UEFA Cup in the first round.
