Monaco putting faith in Vieri

Italy striker Christian Vieri will lead AS Monaco FC's bid for UEFA Cup glory, one of a number of notable additions ahead of the competition's restart.

Vieri spearhead
Christian Vieri is set to spearhead Monaco's bid for European glory following his move from AC Milan. The 32-year-old Italian striker left the San Siro in January having made five appearances in this season's UEFA Champions League group stage. Monaco coach Francesco Guidolin has opted to register Vieri ahead of countryman Marco Di Vaio, another winter arrival at the Stade Louis II. With sides allowed to register just one player who has appeared in another UEFA club competition this term, Di Vaio will be unable to take part in the principality team's campaign having featured for Valencia CF in the UEFA Intertoto Cup final.

Ajax departures
Monaco have also added left-back Manuel Dos Santos – a replacement for the departed Patrice Evra – and striker Alexandre Licata, recently landed from lower-league CS Louhans-Cuiseaux. Elsewhere, two former AFC Ajax defenders look to make an impact following January transfers from Amsterdam; Nigel de Jong of Hamburg and Sevilla's Julien Escudé. The German side have also included Mario Fillinger and Boris Leschinski, while Javier Varas Herrera and Jonathan Ruiz Llaga are other new names in the Sevilla squad.

Palermo reshuffle
US Città di Palermo have shuffled their pack, bringing in goalkeeper Cristiano Lupatelli, midfielder Giovanni Tedesco and forward Denis Godeas, while allowing six players to leave. Fellow Italian club Udinese Calcio also have significant reinforcements in the shape of midfielder Roberto Baronio and 19-year-old Rodrigo Defendi. Uruguay striker Walter Pandiani will bolster the RCD Espanyol challenge; SC Heerenveen sold Klaas Jan Huntelaar to AFC Ajax and Georgios Samaras to Manchester City FC while introducing Marc de Vries; and AS Roma lost Antonio Cassano to Real Madrid CF but are able to welcome back Damiano Tommasi.
