AFC Ajax have handed Belgian Under-21 starlet Jan Vertonghen a new contract until June 2011.
Versatile performer
The 19-year-old left-sided player, who can play in defence and midfield, has been at Ajax for two years since leaving KFC Germinal Beerschot Antwerpen. He has played three times in the Eredivisie this season, twice in the UEFA Cup and once in the UEFA Champions League. He will hope to be build on that in 2007 and it promises to be a big year on the international stage too, as he could be part of his country's squad at this June's UEFA European Under-21 Championship finals to be played in the Netherlands.
