The 23-year-old midfielder Schaars, who captained the Netherlands to the 2006 UEFA European Under-21 Championship and is now a senior international, is to undergo left ankle surgery on 24 January and will be ruled out for six to eight weeks. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Didulica, 29 - already sidelined through concussion - is to have an operation on his left ankle on 6 February and will be missing "for a long period of time" according to the club. Alkmaar, third in the Eredivisie, meet Fenerbahçe SK in the UEFA Cup Round of 32 next month.
