Visitors burdened by first-leg baggage

Daunting trips await FC Bayern München and Rangers FC when their UEFA Cup semi-final ties conclude at FC Zenit St. Petersburg and ACF Fiorentina on Thursday.

'Not afraid'
The Bundesliga leaders still have their sights set on a domestic and European clean sweep, but their hopes of appearing in the Manchester final on 14 May took a dent when Lucio's own goal gave the Russian side a 1-1 first-leg draw in Bavaria. Bayern still believe they can emerge victorious, however, with Franck Ribéry leading the charge. "We'll go there with confidence," the French international said. "There's still everything to play for and we aren't afraid of any team, even on their ground."

Trophy dreams
Bayern might possibly draw inspiration from fellow German side Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who triumphed 1-0 at the Petrovsky Stadium in the previous round, but that came after they had lost the first leg 4-1. Indeed, Dick Advocaat's men have been a tough proposition at home this term and are looking to become only the second Russian club to lift a major European trophy after PFC CSKA Moskva tasted glory in the same competition in 2004/05.

Away form
In Italy, meanwhile, Fiorentina will be careful not to read too much into their goalless stalemate at Ibrox. Rangers also failed to find a way past Sporting Clube de Portugal in the home leg of their quarter-final, only to respond with a thrilling 2-0 success abroad. The Glasgow giants also became the only Scottish club to win on Italian soil when they defeated AS Livorno Calcio 3-2 in last season's UEFA Cup group stage. "It will be an enormous game over there and the best team on the night will go through," said Rangers midfielder Thomas Buffel. "Hopefully, it will be us."
