Brazilian playmaker Marcelinho has left UEFA Cup hopefuls VfL Wolfsburg and signed for CR Flamengo in his homeland on a two-and-a-half year contract.

'Surprising farewell'
No details of the transfer fee for the 33-year-old, who scored 12 times in 50 league appearances during 18 months with the club, have been announced. Wolfsburg coach Felix Magath is disappointed to be losing the services of the five-times capped Brazilian who has also turned out for Hertha BSC Berlin in the Bundesliga, saying: "His surprising farewell is a great loss to us and for the Bundesliga. He was our skipper and has done a lot for the club aside from playing football. Without Marcelinho we would not have reached the UEFA Cup. He has played an outstanding season and played a decisive part in us avoiding relegation the season before." Wolfsburg enter the UEFA Cup in the first round as a reward for their fifth-place finish in the German top flight last term.
