Manchester City FC would do well to take their Danish UEFA Cup opponents seriously after FC Midtjylland demolished their main league rivals at the weekend.
Quick treble
Odense BK proved to be tough opponents for City's Premier League rivals Aston Villa FC in the UEFA Intertoto Cup this season, with Martin O'Neill's side prevailing 3-2 on aggregate. However, OB were no match for Midtjylland on Sunday, as they were overwhelmed in Herning, Nigerian forward Babajide Collins Babatunde scoring the first three of four goals in the space of 30 minutes.
Short history
Founded in 1999 with the merger of former rivals Ikast FS and Herning Fremad, Midtjylland have become a major footballing force on the Jutland peninsula, embracing the future by setting up their own youth academy, which attracts players from a partner club in Nigeria as well as Denmark. Last season the Ulvene – Wolves – finished second in the Superliga for the second time in their short history.
Significant victory
Midtjylland arrive at the City of Manchester Stadium on Thursday as the top side in Denmark, with ten points from the first four games of the new Superliga season. Thomas Thomasberg's side have already proved they have plenty of goals in them, putting ten past Bangor City FC over two legs in their UEFA Cup first qualifying round tie, and they may feel there are more in the offing against a City side whose only competitive games this season saw them overcome Faroese side EB/Streymur 2-0 twice in their opening UEFA Cup qualifying fixture.
'More in me'
Baba Collins for one is hoping there is magic in the air. The 19-year-old forward scored in the eleventh, 19th and 41st minutes against OB and said: "I felt like I was dreaming, but I have got even more in me. I can feel it inside my body!" The club have set an official target of winning the Danish title by 2011 at the latest. They may be hitting championship form earlier than they expected.
