AFC Ajax have signed defender Rob Wielaert from Dutch rivals FC Twente for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Close competition
The 30-year-old has agreed a contract tying him to the Amsterdam club until June 2011, with Ajax also having the option to extend the deal by a further season. The move represents a blow to a Twente side sitting only one position – and four points – behind second-placed Ajax in the Eredivisie table.

'A step up'
Twente chairman Joop Munsterman said of his former club captain: "Rob had developed into a key player for the team during the last two and a half years. We did everything we could to keep him, but Rob saw Ajax as a step up on the sporting ladder." Wielaert made 101 appearances in all competitions after joining the Enschede club from NEC Nijmegen in the summer of 2006. While his new side will take on ACF Fiorentina in the last 32 of the UEFA Cup next month, Twente will tackle Olympique de Marseille.
